Old Words for the New Year

These authors and their poems have been a comfort and a source of hope to me, a reminder that when we have no words of our own, our favorite authors can speak for us. We are the beneficiaries of an inherited imagination that stretches backwards and forwards, uniting our experiences as humans across time and giving us words to use when our own fail. I hope that you can find comfort in their words, too.

Loch Lomond and The Power of Place

One of the things I love about reading is that, often without meaning to, I find similar themes and ideas popping up in the texts I’m reading for pleasure and for work. Most recently this happened during my preparations for this year’s Spring Term trip to Scotland and my time planning and teaching the British […]

Back to Basics: How to Read Shakespeare

Today is Shakespeare’s birthday, so to celebrate I thought I’d share another post in my Back to Basics series. Last time our focus was on reading and understanding poetry, and today we’re taking things one step farther by focusing on the man, the myth, the legend: William Shakespeare. Today’s post starts with some overall tips […]

14 People to Know

We’re one week in to the school year, and my last semester of graduate school starts this week (can you hear the Hallelujah Chorus in the distance?). So before things get too crazy, I wanted to pause and share my review of 7 Men by Eric Metaxas. This is a book I read several years ago after […]

Happy Birthday, Shakey!

Last year on Shakespeare’s birthday I wrote at length about why I love Shakespeare, and I gave you several good reasons why he’s still worth reading. Not much has changed about my opinion over the last 365 days, so I’ll just direct you to that post if you’re questioning the Bard’s relevance. Today’s post is more of a reflection […]

A Tribute to Flannery O’Connor

On this day in 1925, Flannery O’Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia. Today, in honor of her life, I’ve decided to try and put down on paper why she has recently become one of the authors I admire most. It’s actually been fairly difficult to pin down why exactly I love her writing so much. […]

Andalusia Farm: A Literary Excursion

It’s officially Fall, which means it’s time for Fall Break! I was so excited this year to actually receive a few days off to relax and regroup before we head further into the semester. While I’ve done a lot of sleeping and reading, I also thought it would be fun to sneak away to Milledgeville, […]

Author Spotlight: Kate DiCamillo

This week, I’ll be posting a lot about children’s books. It’s summer time, and if your kids are home from school you might be looking for something to keep them entertained. On a rainy day like today, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book. My goal for the next few posts is to share […]
