Yesterday I stopped by Barnes and Noble on a whim and picked up this book. The movie version is scheduled to release in June, and I saw the first trailer yesterday.  It looked intriguing, so I jumped headfirst and purchased it!

Well, I finished it last night. Not even a whole day later. The story is so sweet and romantic that it grabbed me and wouldn’t let go! The last time I read a book in one day was this time last year when I read The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. 

Me Before You is about Louisa Clark, an ordinary girl who takes a job caring for a quadriplegic man who lives in her town.

What I didn’t know about this book, and what I feel you should know, is that it centers around a very emotional, very controversial topic in today’s society. Since I don’t want to spoil anything, I’ll just say that I do not agree with the stance this book takes on the issue.

Sometimes when I find a book like this, I wish I had known from the beginning, so that maybe I wouldn’t have picked it up or spent the money on it. But after thinking about this book last night and this morning, I’m glad I read it. It’s a touching story, and it doesn’t shy away from the real, difficult situations that people are in. I love a good love story, and this is a good love story, but be prepared and definitely keep the tissues nearby.

Aristotle wrote “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” To me, that is also what it means to be a critical reader. I think we should all examine what we read to make sure it lines up with our beliefs, but in the end I’m glad I read this one–It made me think, even if it didn’t change my mind.
