The Summer Slump

I’ve always relied on summer break to get a lot of my 50 books read–with no classes to take or teach, I should be able to knock out a majority of the total and be stress-free when December rolls around. Right?

Well, it’s not always that simple.

Confession time: Every summer that I’ve kept track of my reading goal, I’ve experienced some kind of “summer slump.” Thinking about it today, I’ve come up with a few possible reasons for the slump.

Slump #1: Reading is a Routine

In summer, all of my routines change. From what time I wake up to what time I go to sleep, it’s all different. The times I usually spend reading are now taken up with something else.

Slump #2: Netflix is Calling

Because I have more free time during the summer, it’s easy to veg out and watch reruns on Netflix. There’s nothing good on TV, but instead of that fact pushing me to read, it sends me to the internet instead.

Slump #3: Well Begun is Half Done…Or is it?

I can’t even count the number of books that I have started this summer and have yet to finish, but let’s just say it’s more than five. That’s a lot of chapters that haven’t lead to a finished book.

Possible Solutions:

  • Give up and veg out.
  • Buy all new books.
  • Read lots of picture books and call it a day.
  • Don’t start a new book until you’ve finished an old one.
  • Audiobooks.
  • Set a reading schedule.

So there you have it–three causes for the summer slump. If you’re stuck, you’re not alone. So now while I figure out how to truly solve this problem, let me know if you’re stuck in a reading slump. What causes it? How can I escape!?!

…that way at least one of us is accomplishing something!

I have this problem too! I try to spend more time outside – helps keep me away from Netflix and there’s little you can do outside BUT read/listen to books!
